My last post introduced what I consider an obnoxious set of products sold by a company called Iovate (whose website appears to be just their address and logo… seems like a waste) that have the names “Blank MD”, and substitute “Heartburn” or “Cholesterol” for “blank”. I described my feelings about calling the products “conditions”, rather than the supplements they contain, and using the phrase “MD” in the names, as if OTC supplements were the same as prescription medication.
So what’s in these witches’ brews? I’ll start with “Heartburn MD”. As I said in my last post, the main ingredient is Calcium Carbonate, which is fine. That’s no different than what you’ll get in Rolaids, Tums, Mylanta, Maalox, or just about any other over the counter instant relief antacid. But for you supplement-types, there’s also some “orange peel extract”.
What does “orange peel extract” do? Does it really treat reflux? Well, a Pubmed search turns up about 10 to 20 small studies on possible cancer protective effects of orange peel extract, mostly in mice and rat journals (i.e. research done on little furry mammals). However, many places on the internet claim it is good for heartburn. One page in particular caught my attention, something called “Ask the Doctor”., which is an interview with a guy named Dr. Decker Weiss who, ironically enough, is NOT a doctor. (not a medical doctor anyway, though it goes on to say he did a Cardiology residency, so, go figure). He is a “naturopath”. I’ll write about those another time.
He helpfully tells us that orange peel extract is PROVEN to reduce symptoms of acid reflux. That’s great “Doctor” Weiss. The problem is, he only cites one study, OVER AND OVER AGAIN as the “proof”. And guess what? That study is PROPRIETARY!!! So you can’t look it up anywhere. Apparently it was based on a questionnaire with NO control group. Oy vay!
On the advertisement for “Heartburn MD”, a footnote at the bottom tells us that:
“In a two phase clinical trial, subjects taking just one of the key compounds (???) of Heartburn MD reported significant relief of occasional heartburn”
Gee, want to bet that the “key ingredient” they were referring to was the CALCIUM CARBONATE??? We’ll never know, because there is no citation.
Heartburn MD also contains a delicious helping of Garcinia mangostana extract which has many reported medicinal uses. On the Asian continent, it appears to be used for dysentery, colitis, eczema, cystitis, gonorrhea… yeah, okay. I’ll take penicillin thanks. There’s some other things, extract of Ginger, caraway seeds, and pomegranate. Funny. In medical school, I don’t remember discussing the healing powers of pomegranate for reflux. Must be a conspiracy by the medical community to keep us from these powerful natural medicines.
Bottom line: buy Tums à cost on drugstore.com… 4.99.
Heartburn MD à cost on drugstore.com… 17.99
Don’t be a sucker, please. Much more to follow on this subject.

Dear Angry Doctor,
I just happened upon your post and have enjoyed reading your rants. I actually have a blog I entitled my angry blog. Southern women are trained not to be angry and not to show it if they are, so reading your most recent posts was vicarioulsy catharic for me.
When I first saw the Danactive commercial, I thought for a split second that it might be a satire of old 50's Leave it to Beaver style commercials. Trajically, no, it was just a really, really stupid commercial. I also remember upon first encountering the blankmd line I thought it was a brilliant marketing scheme - to fool people into thinking this was a medicine from a doctor, thus it was a prescription, thus it was better than an over-the-counter.
My latest rant is when new age thinkers, cults, pyschologists, whoever, "borrow" the name of a ligit field of scientific study and tack it on to their own theory to make it sound more scientific, or you know, real. Someone recently recommended that I try "bioenergetic analysis." I started googling. The bottom line is that bioenergetic analysis is a type of body-oriented therapy appearantly advocated by some psychologists. The sites I found were written in double speak, but I managed to extract this vague definition: by stimulating/manipulating certain points or areas of the body mental and emotional trama is released, thus the patient feels better. This really pissed me off because it sounded so soft science or even psuedo science. But, here comes the angry rant . . . the term bioenergetics, as you probable know, is shorthand for studying energy transfer in living organisms. I guess they claim they are transfering negative energies out of the body, I'm really not sure, but this just got me going. I am sorry if I have bored you, but rather hope I have given you a whole new dilema to rant/inform people about:just because it has medical/science sounding syllables doesn't mean it is . . .
m sisyphus...
Absolutely I love your rant and kudos to you for seeing through the crap.
I know what you mean about these scientific sounding things. Another example is the Blan kMD doctor who studied "kinanthropology". HUH???? I couldnt even find a definition for that one in an online dictionary or encyclopedia.
Keep getting ANGRY!!!
And thank you for the kind words.
I used to work for a supplement company to be left unnamed. I used to read the ingredients in some of the products and...well this might be an exaggeration, but for items such as weight loss pills, a couple of the main ingredients would be a couple amino acids and Vitamin C. Yeah, thats worth 60 bucks a bottle!
Anyway,I have a couple of clips on YouTube that you may find funny. They are from an upcoming movie entitled Dr. Ravi & Mr. Hyde. Its about a disenchanted doctor who sets out to make a film in response to his midlife crisis. Here are a couple links:

Feel free to contact me at jhuth [at]inecom (dot) com if you like the clips!
jhuth, I tried the links but they didnt work.
I watched a clip for a movie called "Dr Ravi and Mr Hyde", it looks like it might be funny
Sorry the links didnt work Mike. But yes, that is the movie.
My head is with you, but............I've been through cases of Tums (excellent temporary relief), tried Prilosec (after 3 days, the cramping made me miserable). Zantac worked, but I was nervous about long-term side effects.
I tried the Heartburn MD, and have experience relief from my heartburn. Although I can also read the ingredients(and don't see anything but a collection of "old wives' tale"-type ingredients) somehow it works for ME. I can now sleep through the night.
Long term, losing 10-15 pounds may also help. I have already rearranged my diet to exclude the trigger foods.
In the meantime - even if this product's action is only psychosomatic, I will enjoy the results in spite of the evidence.
Scot
I have recently tried the Heartburn MD pills that Walmart sells and couldn't figure out why the citrus taste kept coming back up in my throat. (threw away the box) Thanks for posting this and letting me know for sure why I was still having heartburn (citrus fruits are horrible for my heartburn). Think I'll stick with Rolaids.
I can understand why someone would be skeptical of this product, but I am an "independent test subject" that can attest that it is very effective for at least one person. As someone who has tried almost every pharmaceutical and natural heartburn product out there, Heartburn MD is the most effective solution for my chronic heartburn with no side effects than anything I have tried. I have been able to come off the high dose Prevacid for which I was on and off for years, which caused chronic headaches for me. The orange peel extract is a product that I have used in other supplements with significant success, but the effect did not carry throught the dose period. This dosage is smaller amounts twice daily, which helps distribute treatment more evenly. For me, spending $20 bucks a month is a small price relative to the $100 plus per month I was spending on on Prevacid. I would suggest anyone looking for natural effective relief to give it a try, in addition to modifying their diet accordingly.
How sad it must be to be you. I just wanted to send my apologies for what seems to be such a miserable life you are leading. As a fellow physician and surgeon, I find it disturbing to stumble upon such an angry and ignorant "doctor". It is unbelievable that patients are in the care of a "doctor" like yourself, whose heart is not in helping patients get better, but rather invested in ranting like a child and encouraging negativity in all forms. You are a disgrace to the medical profession and to the good of society for that matter. Your obvious insecurities as an individual should be addressed before even touching a patient. It never ceases to amaze me that there are doctors like yourself. Why would someone so angry and unhappy even think to enter a profession which is focused on caring for the health of other individuals? Where is your tact? Do you even have any values? My apologies for your obvious insecurities....I hope you find your way into a healthier state of mind. Thank you for reading my comment, as it is the one and only time I will ever stumble upon this site again.
Good luck!
You have made 2 errors in your judgement of Heartburn MD. #1 It only costs 5 or 6$ at Walmart for 20 doses. #2 As someone whose was using cimetidine and ranitidine almost every day, and suffering the rebound effects, Heartburn MD was a MIRACLE. I barely use antacids at all anymore since I found HMD. If I feel anything nasty I take 2 and the pain goes away 95% of the time. Which is very rare. I don't understand the herbal interaction but IT WORKS. Screw the drug companies, they are the reason the USA is the sickest western nation.
I agree with the physician and surgeon who said, "How sad it must be to be you." As a sufferer of a chronic cough due to acid reflux for 22 years I have tried everything, to no avail. Because of the concern of my son's girlfriend I tried Heartburn MD, and found the evasive answer. Not only do I NOT cough the days that I use Heartburn MD, the citric flavor that comes back up my throat actually SOOTHES my throat. I have never found anything that does that. So, for the record, Heartburn MD works. And I pray for YOUR peace.
I would like to say to you "angry doctor" sounds a little like your an ass...you want to knock a product that may actually work and help people and your the 1st to talk trash about it. Well good for you. Despite your ranting and raving about what doesnt work and cant possibly be true just so happens to work great for my husband. We have tried your Tums that you say are so great and the axid, and prevacid and imagine that NOTHING WORKED until we found heartburn md...now my husband is enjoying foods that he wasnt able to eat before, drinks that made him miserable are now his favorites. So if people want to bad mouth this product go right ahead, I will gladly spend the $5 a box over the 1.99 tums everyday of the week.
There's got to be something going on besides the calcium carbonate. CaC03 by itself would treat my heartburn...for about 45 seconds. Then time for another dose. Heartburn MD works for at least a couple of hours. No idea which other ingredient is prolonging the effect.
I normally take Prilosec (proton pump inhibitor) but tried the Heartburn MD product just to see if it would work. I am always looking for alternatives to Prilosec, in case it was unavailable. Heartburn MD has worked for my wife also.
I'm tired of doctors putting down anything that is not a drug.I agree with the previous comments thatHeartburnMD is a great product and works! I will continue to buy it at walmart or walgreens where it is less than the $17 you quoted.
I too am a satisfied user of HBMD. The only problem now is finding a store that carries the product. I used to get it at WalMart but it hasn't been available for months. Prior to using HBMN I was using Mylanta caps whcih produced similar relief. When I inquire at the pharmacy about both products I get let me check and they will get back to me.
When you get up in the middle of the night with heartburn, you don't want to chew a "Tums-like" product. HBMD or the Mylanta tabs worked almost immediately.
I will keep searching.
I have found that different products or medicines don't work for everyone. I used to take pepcid which is an expensive product whenever I started to experience terrible heartburn some years ago. I happened to come across Heartburn MD in Harmon stores and decided to try it especially the price only being about $5:00. Well it is definitely better than Pepcid and at a much better price. I feel it works wonders for me and I love it.I am having a difficult time now finding the product in stores so I am buying it on the internet
One more comment that I forgot to add. I think you are exactly that!!! An Angry Doctor!!!! You'd rather see everyone take all kinds of drugs that have bad side effects opposed to something more natural. I don't like calling anyone names but, sorry!!!you are the crazy one!!!!!
Say what you want but my wife says this is the best product she has used for her reflux. After taking one pill a day for a week her reflux is under control and now she only take one pill every 3rd or 4th day. The combination of ingredients is great.
