SLEEP MD

I will continue my investigation of the “BLANK MD” product line. Check here for the beginning of my series. The ingredients in SLEEP MD can be found here.

The first ingredient listed, white willow bark, is also known as Salix alba. “Salix” is Latin for “willow” so that’s logical. They isolated salicin in 1828 from the bark. It is a derivative of salicylic acid, hence it does have ability to treat fever. Sometimes I hear NSAIDS make patients sleepy, so I suppose this may have utility, or if your insomnia is due to pain, in which case I might see a doctor (shudder).

There is a delicious helping of “Valerian extract”. (it says “deodorized grade”, so the stinky version must not be so helpful). A journal called “Sleep Medicine” (gee, I wonder what that’s about) published a systematic review of the literature on this tasty herb and guess what? I’ll quote them:

“The evidence for valerian as a treatment for insomnia is inconclusive.”

So far, we have a weak pain reliever and an inconclusive stinky herb. What else is in this crud?

There’s some lemon balm and hops extract. Maybe a Mike’s Hard Lemonade is in order.

OK, what about our old friend melatonin? In the 1950’s, the hormone melatonin was isolated, and over the years it was discovered that the pineal gland releases more melatonin when it’s dark, and inhibits its production when it’s light out. A study in the Lancet from 1995 seemed to find melatonin helped in elderly patients, but there were only TWELVE people in the study!

Studies done in the journal Sleep indicated young adults had faster time to sleep and a deeper hypnotic state (wheeeee…) There’s also inconsistent results in allieviating jet lag. Most of the studies are summarized in a nice review in the NEJM here. The most fascinating (to me) is that melatonin may slow METASTATIC BREAST CANCER! That’s right! You heard it here first folks (well, not first, but anyway.) Check out the citation here.

A review of chronic insomnia in the NEJM in 2005 notes the following:

Studies of melatonin, which have involved small numbers of subjects treated for short periods with various doses and formulations, have demonstrated conflicting results.

So melatonin may (or may not) help sleep onset, jet lag, and sleep potency.

Passionflower extract is also an old time medicine used for insomnia and anxiety. The problem is that no good scientific data exists to intelligently evaluate this compound. If you don’t believe me, just read these learned people here. Ditto for the Scutellaria lateriflora.

Coenzyme Q10 rounds out the slop, but I couldn’t find treatment of insomnia as even one of the common uses of this supplement. You can find a nice list here

So this is how Marvin Heuer, MD and this band of quacks make the big bucks. They package melatonin and valerian root together with some other garbage that has no science to back it up, and call it “SLEEP MD”!

All in a days’ work for these chowderheads.

By the way, melatonin from drugstore.com – 5.99 for 120 tablets
SLEEP MD from drugstore.com - 15.99 for 30 tablets..

The stinky version of valerian is absolutely disgusting and gives me insomnia just thinking about it. *shudder*

Does the box instruct you to chase the pill with a pint of Jack and some Benadryl?

Call it crap if you want, but it's the only thing that works for me. I've tried prescriptions (addictive), tea, drinking (works but not so healthy) and the only thing that helps me sleep well is Sleep MD.

It works in an hour and is the only product that lets me sleep straight through. I'll gladly pay the price if it helps me sleep so I can live a normal life.

By the way, every damn doctor I know is pushing some prescription. Even a GP. They're all money whores, so big deal.

i think i'm gonna invent a product called "chicks blow-me MD". i bet that'd be a HUGE seller!

I work nights, so it's hard sometimes to get sleepy when I need to be: around 6-8 am. I usually get up around 4 pm and work my 10 or 12 hour shift.

NPR had a thing a while back about sleep problems, and the doc they had on there mentioned, in passing, that melatonin might work. So I picked up a bottle. Great stuff. Works better than anything else I tried for inducing sleep.

I tried having a glass of wine. Not good. Benadryl: not so good either. Too much anticholinergic stuff. Particular the urinary retention. I constantly felt like I had to pee, even though I didn't. So I got 120 melatonin tablets from a decent pharmacy for $6.

Forget paying more. Fantastic stuff. I use it a few times a week. One 3 mg tablet about half an hour before bedtime and I'm sleeping well, and staying asleep.

The only thing that concerns me is the lack of safety information available. It seems like a fairly safe medication, but I couldn't find anything in the nursing or physician drug references I have beyond a general description. Never had access to the PDR to see if there's any info in the supplement section.

I generally avoid it on days when I work, using it on my off days when I am less active. There seems to be some residual effects -- more fatigue at the start of the waking period, unusual and vivid dreams from time to time, increased fatigue at the natural low point in the daily cycle (around 0130 to 0300).

For occasional use, melatonin alone seems more than adequate and performs as well or better than many OTC sleep aids.

I would love to jump into the conspiracy theory, but honestly after years of dealing with delayed sleep phase syndrome, this is the only product that seems to work without any serious side effects. have tried Diazepam, Alprazolam and Zolpidem in the past, but was never been happy with any as there is a potential for abuse and also, you get a groggy feeling in the morning.

The only thing that bothers me about the Sleep MD is that there is no indication of quantity of the ingredients, so its difficult for a anyone to calculate dosage depending on symptoms (eg, for me, its around 1mg). So, its like you are expected to trust the "proprietary blend".

I believe that many folks react differently to the ingredients in the product, but for me, they work just fine.

Sounds like the "Angry Doctor" is angry because he didn't invent Sleep MD. Too bad...it works!

I've used sleep MD and have found it incredibly beneficial. It has dramatically reduced the time taken for me to get to sleep and i sleep deeper and waker up feeling better. would recommend for anyone, no side affects are apparent.

The reason there is caffeine in Apsirin is because it otherwise induces drowsiness. White Willow Bark is the raw form of Apsirin.

Anonymous said...

The first night I took Sleep MD I never went to sleep. I was awake all night. I took Sleep MD the next night, same thing! Maybe the caffeine?

Anonymous said...

I agree with JMY. It works extremely well for me. I also agree with his (her) comment about doctors pushing products. If these doctors have their name on something that works, why not?

I'd rather take something with these ingredients than traditional prescription sleeping pills.

somehow i think ancient civilizations who've used these for longer than we've been able to even test them scientifically would be more proof than random ramblings about "inconclusive" data.

Anonymous said...

i also forgot, i have no clue where you buy your sleeping medication but you are getting ripped off majorly

Some people actually have the opposite result from Valerian: it keeps them awake, just fyi

I wish I had seen this blog sooner because I paid $29.99 for Sleep MD and it has had no effect at all on me. I feel like I've been duped because the packaging suggested a safe alternative to dyphenhydramine, but at least I was able to sleep when I took the the benedryl. Sleep MD is did not work for me.

SLEEP MD DOES NOT WORK!! Do not believe what their AD says...it does not work at all

Anonymous said...

Just got back from the GIANT super center (guess which one?) desperate for something to render me unconscious - am on night #4 with 2 hours of sleep or less per each... Have used the typical doctor prescribed stuff, love the Lunesta commercials, but the stuff made me want to be a serial killer or something. YUCK! The hangover/amnesia affects of Xanax and other benzo's not for me either. Bought the Sleep MD - we'll see....... After tonight, I'm finding a liquor store if this stuff doesn't work.

I recently fell from a ladder crushing my 12th vertebrae. To reduce the pain I was prescribed the following,in order; Ratio Morphine/Codeine Contin and Lyrica.
Some of these did help reduce the pain but all of them helped me sleep.
I soon decided the use of these drugs was not in my best interest so I asked to be precribed a sleep medication. Imovane came first followed by Novo Lorazem. Neither of these did anything to help me sleep. Next came over the counter Nytol. No relief whatsoever.
Then I saw the ad for SleepMD which I found in my local pharmcy for $12.95.
Four nights in a row with one pill have givend me the best sleep since I fell off the ladder.
So Dr.Pho, regardless of your investigation and negative comments about this product for some who have tried it IT WORKS!

Anonymous said...

Even if the evidence is inconclusive per individual ingredient, I'm surprised the doctor didn't even mention the possibility of a synergistic effect when the herbs are combined. If it works at all, this is most likely how.

SleepMD worked for me. I had been seriously plagued with insomnia for about five weeks...I was at the end of my rope. I was tired all the time, I was behind in all my chores and completely overwhelmed...Not wanting to be prescribed a sleeping pill, I chose to go with an OTC sleep aid. I started out small with ST. Johns Wort, though it did relax me, it was not enough to help me sleep.

Then I tried Nytol, which contains the same famous diphenhydramine as Benedryl. This was somewhat effective, it sedated me enough to fall asleep...sedated may be too weak of a word...knocked me out is more like it...but I would wake up again within 4 - 5 hours, and was unable to take another one since the directions said only one per night...I was very groggy as if I didn't sleep at all.

Then I found SleepMD...I asked the pharmacist at my local drug store for any info she may have had on the product, and all she could tell me was that she tried the ColdMD and it worked for her, so I decided to give it a try...what was the worst that could happen? Well, I've been taking one pill a night for the last 3 nights, and I haven't had such a great sleep in years...YEARS! I wake up super refreshed and ready to go...I even tried rolling over and going back to sleep, and I laid there thinking "I want to get up!" which is the exact opposite of what I wanted a week prior. I would definitely recommend trying it.

This stuff is better than Red Bull! It was great! I stayed up all night moving around and staring at the walls! Oh I'm sorry...I just realized that sleepMD was supposed to make you sleep. Right...not even close. I tried to search it on ripoffreport.com but it wasn't there. By the way. I'm writing this at 6:30 am after having taken sleepMD at 10pm last night. Still bouncing around.

Ummm...why the @#*$ would any intelligent person put CoQ10 (a powerful anti-oxident) in a sleeping pill...if you go to any drug store and look at the CoQ10 Boxes....they say "Helps the body produce more energy from fat cells." GREAT! So the melatonin makes me sleepy...but my fat is keeping me awake all night...BRILLIANT

Where can I buy Sleep MD?
Walgreens? CVS? I didn't see it at Walmart.

Thanks...Arizona

This stuff is terrible I wasted 15 bucks on it last night. It made me midly sleepy after forever (not a few minutes) and then I was in a very light light sleep the whole time and woke up 5 hours later and can't get back to sleep. Terrible, waste of money, sucks. Tylenol PM works way better.

Anonymous said...

The first ingredient listed is
"QuickSleep™ 384 mg"

Or am I reading wrong and quicksleep is the name of the product that is made up of the other ingredients?

Anonymous said...

When I take benadryl, unisom, tylenol or advil pm, simply sleep I dont get tired, but once Im out, Im out; I dont dream and I wake slowly and work thru the grogginess.

When I take Sleep MD I get tired in about 35-45 minutes and dream all night, then wake easier and feeling clear minded.

I feel good knowing that im not dependent on pain relievers or chemically inducing sleep

I have had sleep problems from anxiety for about 2 years and have tried almost everything. The only way I have been able to fall asleep was by drinking 8-12 beers. Not too healthy. Melatonin worked OK but after finding out about Sleep MD I have been able to sleep a full eight hours every night since. This stuff is great and I highly recommend it.

Anonymous said...

Pass on this crap, does nothing for sleep. Even took up to 6, without any effect at all. BOOOO!!!!

legal said...

My hubby was using Tylenol PM which messed up his stomach and then unisom that also messed up his stomach because the recommended doesage did nothing for him and of course him being a man and really wanting his sleep would take more until he felt sleepy and both left him groggy and hung over every morning and now he has tried the sleep MD and inbe pill does nothing but two pills causes his sinuses to act up, stuffing up his nose and then running and just feeling sick!!!!! If he can manage to get to Sleep MD for a few days without the Sleep MD then the symptoms clear up but once he goes back to using it then here he is sick again.

Okay, so everyone out there who loves it can buy the bottles that those who hate it bought and we can live in peace.

I get some smelly all natural concoction from Exclusive Health Products online (Insomnia Relief) that 2 pills a night do the trick for me. But they smell so bad that I have to air them out on the back porch for weeks before I can use them. So I buy a huge supply at once and dump it all in a large basket. I also use a spray form of melatonin to help me drift off.

By the way, my prescription for sleep is Ambien which I use for emergencies (nights in hotels etc). I take one dose and divide in half or thirds. But I refuse to use it regularly as I don't want to get dependent on narcotics. It gives me absolutely wild dreams that sometimes wake me up they're so wierd. I don't get that effect from natural solutions.

I cannot take OTC sleep meds. Some of the ingredients cause my heart to race and keep me awake all night.

I bought "Sleep MD" today because I am going though a tough time with my sleeping schedule and am haveing a very tough time falling asleep.

Going to try it tonight and hope for the best.

From the comments here, either people love it or hate it... I guess I shall see where I stand for myself.

I purchased Sleep MD from Wal-mart. I really wondered if it would work. It worked great and continues to do so. My husband has also taken it several times. Works for him too. I don't understand why people are bashing it on here. It is a good product, natural ingredients, no side affects. Why all the anger??? ~Kim B.

Dude,

You're a bit over-the-edge about all this. Either the stuff works or it doesn't, but your nasty point of view abiout it doesn't even seem justifiable.

I tried it, seemed no better than a couple of melatonin and won't buy it again. If iy really irked me I'd send it back for a refund. However, I'm definitely not going to start a website about my displeasure.

Might be time for some REAL medication if silly stuff like this gets you down, pally.

Works like a dream for me. I'm asleep within the hour and don't wake up all night. No side effects - Sleep MD is amazing if you ask me!

Anonymous said...

Like most things, it doesn't work for everybody. My girlfriend's mother suggested Sleep MD and it works great for her. I was tired of taking OTC generic nighttime cold medicine for the drowsy effects because they usually make me sluggish in the morning. Tried Sleep MD and it didn't help at all. Tried it quite a few times to be sure...nothing. Ambien worked best with fewest drawbacks in the morning, but it's a scrip. What works may depend a lot on diet, etc.

Anonymous said...

I don't get the self-centred and angry sounding 'I-am-the-world-and it-doesn't-work-for-me-so-it- doesn't-work-at-all' attitude
If it doesn't work for you than it's obvious you just don't ever buy it again, right?!

I too suffer(ed) from sleeping problems. I have a hard time falling asleep and when I do sleep it's only a few hours a night complete with vivid and way too busy dreams which keep me both wired, tired and incredibly agitated during the day.

So I fell for the ad, tried it and was dissapointed when I didn't fall asleep within the promised minutes BUT was happily suprised when I finally got very sleepy after 20 minutes and dropped off into dreamland, when normally I would stare at the ceiling for hours. I stayed asleep and with less 'busy' dreams as before although in the mornings I didn't feel all refreshed, this might be the result of many many months of no sleep, maybe I have lots of sleep to catch up to.

I'm not one to say "yeah this product is the best in the world and seeing that it worked for me it will work for everybody"
But I will say that I'm happy that it is working for me, so far.
Over the years I have tried all sorts of alternatives; the highly addictive sleeping tablets from gp, all the gimmicks they say that should help one fall asleep such as reading a book before bed time, no coffee after 15.00, meditation, relax excersise, no energetic activities at least this amount of hours before bed time, no alcohol blah blah... even tried counseling! No such luck until I tried this product and so far it's going ok.

If you want to try SleepMD try emailing them and see if you can get one or two tablets per mail A try before buy. If they are confident enough about their product they should hand out samples to those asking for them.

Pet... you sound like me and I am happy to hear this product worked for you. I have been suffering with insomnia for over 4 years. I've tried everything! Lunesta worked for a while, but stoppped. Ambien CR did not work at all. OTC sleep aids didn't work. I have been taking xanax for over 2 years and it helps some, but still doesn't work all that great. I usually make myself a nice coctail of alcohol, xanax, valerian root and benadryl, thinking combined they will work, and usually they do but that scares me. Last night I took nothing but 1 mg of xanax and still slept horrible! Maybe after taking it for so long it has lost its effects. I am at my wits end! I am hopeful that Sleep MD will help and am picking some up tonight. Wish me luck! I will report back tomorrow. If this stuff can help me sleep then I'd say it can help anyone sleep...but I do know everyone is different.

Well I sit here tired again. Unfortunately Sleep MD was not the miracle I had hoped it would be. I did feel it start to work, but my mind quickly took over and I was wide awake. When I didn't fall asleep after an hour and a half, I took a half a mg of xanax, a benadryl and washed those down with a couple of shots of vodka. I did sleep better though than I normally do so I guess the Sleep MD did help with the quality of sleep. I am not going to bash it as it did help a lot of people from what I have read here. That is great! Things work dofferently for different people so if you find something that works, that is wonderful! My hunt continues, but I am still going to give Sleep MD a fair shake and will take it a few more times and see what happens.

To April T:
Too bad Sleep Md couldn't help you immediatly.
Erhm hoping I won't be medling (too much) in your affairs but as you mentioned it yourself (that you felt it worked but than your mind shook you up) I wonder whether after no sleep for so long something else might be going on... depression? high levels of stress? or maybe a fear of falling asleep for some reason??

Have you talked to your doctor? Or maybe one of those sleep specialists? Just throwing some suggestions your way.

I sure hope Sleep MD will kick in tonight tomorow or soon any ways. Mine is almost gone (6 left so 6 nights of rest for me hehe)
I'm now trying to order some (they don't sell Sleep MD in Europe argh)

April T. said...

To Pet:
Thanks for your suggestions. I have been to my dr. which is why I have been on xanax for 2 years. I talked to a new dr. recently as I switched health care providers and told him I wanted to do a sleep study. He said that it wouldn't help since we pretty much know the reason why I can't sleep, which is a fear of not being able to sleep. I have had so many years of bad sleep that it is the reason I have bad sleep. It's a vicious circle. Ugh! I do have a series of tapes that teach you how to deal with anxiety and depression. Maybe I should start listening to them. I certainly don't want to be taking drugs forever. And as I stated before, I tend to make myself "coctails" which scares me.

Good luck on getting your Sleep MD. I'm so glad it works for you. Try Amazon.com. Saw a good deal on there. Take care! :-)

Good thing I checked out what white willow bark is; seems to be the raw form of aspirin, which I'm allergic to so my search continues to find something, or combination of things (diet, exercise, etc.), to relieve the sleepless nights.

True I do not sleep as deep using a product similar to Sleep MD (I cannot take valerian of any type as it is like speed in my system) as I do when I take Xanex. But I do not want to be addicted to alprazolam or anything else so I take Restaid most of the time and a half of Xanex when I want to "catch up" with some deep sleep. It seems like I am on the verge of waking up all night. The ingredients of Restaid are very similar to Sleep MD minus the valerian root. We all have to try to take things that are better for our body than major depressants. I will continue my struggle until I find a solution.

I have had a horrible bout of insomnia for quite a long time. I have been given prescriptions, Ambien, Lunesta, Rozerem, etc. I finally got up the other night and purchased some SleepMD and lo and behold, I fell right asleep, stayed asleep and feel like a normal human being today, for the first time in a very long time. Whatever the ingridients that are in this product, they are the right ones for me. Everyone has different needs, I guess, but this product is a lifesaver. I am hoping to finally get my circadian rhythm back to normal with the help of this product. No, I am not affiliated with the product in any way, shape or form.

It is very interesting to read these sometimes extreme pro or con comments. The plain fact is that most medicines, particularly OTCs, work for some people and don't work for others. Don't forget the placebo effect, too, which can complicate self-evaluation. Well-designed scientific studies are useful because they document those medicines that work for most people (although usually not everyone). Finally, note that there are many causes of insomnia that need treatments other than medicine. Examples: stress and anxiety can be treated effectively with regular meditation (one source of instruction: www.nsrusa.org). Airway obstructions and central apneas (diagnosed by a "sleep study") can be treated by using CPAP machines.

I used Sleep MD and the first night I had trouble relaxing and falling asleep. I had some chills and shaking, then when I did sleep, my sleep was filled with disturbing dreams. I thought it mignt be caused by some other factor, so I kept using the Sleep MD for the rest of the week. NO SLEEP, TOSSING AND TURNING, all I was able to get was a few "dozes" during the day, and they were very fitfull and filled with ugly dreams.
I read where it works for others, but obviously not for me.

I was awake in the middle of the night and saw TV ad for Sleep MD. It sounded like a 'godsend' to me (in desperate wide awake condition). Found at WalMart in a very 'prominent' location--paid 15.00 for the pills which did absolutely nothing for me. Thefirst few nights I slept fitfully, maybe for a three hour stretch tops; last time I took it I was awake almost all night. I have done better with no med at all! The PM pills work, but I worry about the harmful effects. Don't waste your 15.00. Is this stuff guaranteed? Bet not!

LACK OF PROPER SLEEP HAS KEPT ME IN A CAGE OF THINGS I CAN DO AND THINGS I CAN'T. TRAVEL BECAME EXHAUSTING, SO I DON'T GO TOO FAR. MY MEMORY IS BRIEF FROM BEING TIRED ALL THE TIME WHICH CAUSES A GREAT DEAL OF EMBARASSMENT. I JUST FELT STUPID AND SLOW. I WAS IN PERPETUAL JET LAG. I LIVED FOR FRIDAY NIGHT AND HOLIDAYS. THEN, QUITE BY ACCIDENT, WHILE WAITING FOR A PERSCRIPTION TO BE FILLED, I SPOTTED SLEEP MD. I OVERLOOKED THE SPLASHY ADVERTISING AND JUST WAS OPEN TO ANOTHER SLEEP AID EXPERIENCE. THE FIRST AND SECOND TIME IT DIDN'T SEEM TO WORK. I WAS EXPECTING A KNOCK OUT. A FEW WEEKS LATER I TOOK IT AND FIGURED I JUST FELL TO SLEEP ON MY OWN. THE NEXT NIGHT I WAS AWARE OF THE 5 MINUTE DROWSY FEELING. FROM THEN ON MY LIFE HAS DRAMATICALY CHANGED TO THE POINT I WAS CONCERNED ABOUT SIDE EFFECTS AND THAT IS WHY I'M HERE. WHERE WAS THIS STUFF 20 YEARS AGO?

I've tried both valerian and melatonin for sleep problems. I know, I'd bet everything on it, that melatonin at least works for me for short term sleep problems, I don't know however, what the side effects could be over the long term, melatonin however, does leave me feeling a bit drowsy in the morning (however much less so than diephenhydramine (sp?)). As for valerian, I'm fairly certain I've had succesful results in the past, but not enough to bet on.

I recently stopped smoking marijuana in an attempt to find a new job and have since had problems with sleeping. For the past few weeks since I stopped smoking sleeping has been difficult. A combination of diphenhydramine and alchohol work to some extent but drinking so often can't be good for me. My room-mate offered me some sleep MD. I figured it couldn't hurt so I tried one. It seemed to sedate me somewhat, although I did feel a strange tingeling in my arms. I fell asleep after about two hours and proceeded to have horrible vivid dreams. I think I will stick with Diphenhydramine.

After trying many things (benadryl, exercise, tea, relaxation methods, etc, but not prescription sleep meds) to help me get to sleep, and stay asleep, I very skeptically bought a box of Sleep MD. The pills are big and smell bad. I've never, ever slept better than when I take one of these. I've used nearly 2 boxes over the past year, and only once did it not work. My response is relaxation then drowsiness within an hour of taking the pill, and about 8 hours of uninterrupted good sleep, and wake up feeling good, no hungover or drowsy feeling. I've found nothing better. If I did, I'd use that.

The commenter's that are defending SleepMD seem a little too enthusiastic about this medicine to me. Almost to the point where they cannot believe that it could possibly be a placebo. I think that a little bit of skepticism is good for you and helps with decision making.

Well, I too, like the rest of you, have problems sleeping. I don't like taking drugs to fall asleep either. So I tried the all natural Sleep MD way.

I don't know what caused it, but I went into anaplylactic shock 30 minutes after I took it. I must be allergic to the white billow bark or the valerian root or something. Or the ER doc said it could've been the coating on the drug. I took the Cold MD formula one time, and only once because I got so nauseas it was awful!

As with anything you put in your system, just be careful.

i actually like the "stinky" version of valerian... the smell grows on you, and just the scent of it alone can start my mind towards to sleep mode. As for your research... I would suggest trying some things yourself before just going off of what you scan through articles. Valerian works very well on most people, but takes about a week or so to start working for many. Melatonin most definitely helps to regulate sleep cycles, both off of a decent amount of studies and my own testing. The herbs... are all mild in what they do, but are mainly calming agents for your system, helping you to stay asleep throughout the night in regard to external stimuli.

As with all herb research that I have read, "studies" and first hand experiences, the only truly reliable information I come upon is finding the underlying theme between those who have used the herb and report on it themselves. Clinical "studies" just do not have the scope and range to truly come to a valid conclusion, plus they normally must depend on the response of the subjects involved, and those people are normally just subjects in for a test, not people actually interested in the results and knowing what to look for from previous experiences.

Besides all that... people using this product or other sleep aids really do not need partial references to your vaguely cited "research" into the matter... if you really want to look something up, research the power of the placebo; the ability of the human mind to create the effects thought to be brought on by even a sugar pill. Now combine that with the ability of a sleep aid to promote relaxation, relieve mild discomfort, and help regulate the chemicals responsible for the sleep cycle... and you have something that can help people get some real rest that are plagued with insomnia.

I don't like the morons that put out of these MD products, but don't just throw out information that you do not really understand and just give vague references towards the product that will destroy people's confidence and hamper their brain's ability to give them a good nights rest. Trust me... that is the LAST thing that people having trouble sleeping need.

As it is, the valerian and melatonin in this product will help you sleep; or you can just get the two products separately, or better yet try them one at a time, keeping in mind that on most people valerian takes a few days to kick in; though once it started to help me sleep, any time I took it again my mind knew its effects and it worked that very same night. The rest of the herbs in the mixture... just vaguely help relax the body and ease your rest. Helpful in some cases; in others... just go by cost.

I'd agree that it can work for some and not others so oh well, except Sleep MD nearly put me in the hospital after the first pill last night. My body was paralyzed and I could barely talk. his went on for 2 hours before I could move my hands and get some speech patterns back. Ifinally fell asleep for about six hurs, and this morning I'm shaking so badly I can barely type this. Plus I have chest pains.

I aam on no other medications for this to have had a bad drug mix reaction and I have never had this happen before. The logical answer is it was caused by Sleep MD. I'm never taking that crap again.

Bought this stuff to see if it worked. I helped me fall asleep but it also woke me up 5 hours before my alarm went off and kept me awake. This stuff is complete garbage. I think I'm going to call the phone number on the side of the box today and tell then how sh*tty this product is. The so called doctors that so called formulated this product should have their license to practice medicine pulled. Not only that they should be put in prison for fraud, false advertising and for the class action lawsuit I am going to file against them. I will stick with what I know works. (Beer)

Put me in the 'it works for me' group. I've always been a great sleeper until I was put on an SSRI (effexor), then subsequently given ambien, then ambien-cr, then sonata. Ambien put me out,but I had conversations and meals that I wouldn't remember then next day. Singly melatonin doesn't seem to help and valerian seems to make things worse, but Sleep MD just seems to work....sleepy within 1 hour. Do seem a little more groggy in the am's, but I'm also trying to cut down caffeine, so hard to blame Sleep-MD for that.

You should all know that ALL MEDICATIONS work different in every person. So it might not work for some people but will do wonders for others. My husband of 10 years has been an insomniac since he was eight years old. He's tried everything that you can imagine and this is the first time that I can actually see results. Great product! If you are thinking in buying it I truly believe it's totally worth the $7.99 for 10 pills so that you can decide for yourself if it works for you.

Anonymous said...

I was skeptical about Sleep MD but it worked as well as benadryl. It does give you a sedative effect which you SHOULD be able to feel so if you feel that effect , you know it's working.

Anonymous said...

Well, Doc, I went to a sleep apnea specialist (MD Supreme) which did nothing but take my money and time. Tried everything from Ambien to Diesel Fuel all prescribed by a licensed MD. All garbage. Tried the Sleep MD and it worked and did not even make me suicidal like the Rx's you scum$uckers prescribe.

Now Happy and rested in Southwest Florida!

Anonymous said...

Yeah,, i agree, its a little expensive but most herbal/whole foods store medicines are. It works for me and i would rather be taking something natural than ambien...even though that does knock you out. Also, anything that's FDA approved does not mean shit, its just another way to get people to think that its a safe medication. Most doctors and physicians do not care about you, all they want your money.

Personally I have found this product works. I have suffered from osteo-arthritis since I was 18 years old and the pain reduces or inhibits my ability to sleep. I've tried a variety of remedies for sleep and pain and this product has been working well for me since January 2006. Unlike Benadryl, Advil, placebo and prescription sleep medication, Sleep MD works consistently for me and does not have unpleasant side effects.

Most of all I think that it's important to remember that everyone has different body chemistry and what works for one person may not work for another.

What are you so angry about?

sleep MD works for me...

And so does Valerian....

ah well it is a good PLACEBO effect :D

I've been an insomniac for over a decade. I've tried I've been prescibed all types of things that either didn't work or knocked me out and gave me a hangover in the morning. Sleep MD puts me to sleep within 20 minutes of taking it.

the over the counter as well as the perscription sleep aid work for some and others they do not work for so stop your whining and if it did not work for you try something else and who cares if it is a placebo effect if it helps then who cares. no one is holding a gun to any one of these peoples heads and making them buy it

I have suffered from insomnia for years. I have tried numerous supplements prescribed by naturopaths and osteopaths. SleepMD is the ONLY product that consistently gives me an entire night's sleep within an hour of going to bed. Some other recommendations commented here such as Benadryl make me physically ill and Tylenol PM is like a shot of adrenaline. I guess it only supports that everyone's biochemistry is different. As the adage says, one man's meat is another man's poison. :)

It's a crying shame that Michael Jackson didn't give Sleep MD a try for his chronic insomnia instead of the risky anesthetic Diprivan. Any of us who know how chronic insomnia makes you overwhelmingly exhausted and desperate for a remedy.

it is the only thing that works for me,must be all in my head maybe.
I know that this same product (and other products such as Valium,) keep people awake instead of putting them to sleep, but I have had the best nights sleep in years using this product.(maybe it is hypnosis).

Anonymous said...

Seems like a lot of different opinions, my guess would be people have many reasons for not being able to sleep and this helps some people with some of those reasons. One example to think of is you can raise or lower your blood pressure by lowering or raising a dose of ginseng, so obviously medications or herbs can affect people differently.

I quit drinking a few nights ago, and obviously sleep was an issue, tossing and turning, up late with no booze to knock me out, so I bought this to help sleep through the withdrawal phases...

1st night, still tossed and turned, but the next day was fine, lots of energy. I would wake up it seemed every 90-120 minutes or so, look at the clock, or chase some drunks out of my backyard (seriously), then go back to sleep. So maybe I got the sleep I needed even though it's like I remember the whole night passing.

The next night out like a light, woke up no problem worked a full day. Slept deeply the whole night.

Tonight is night 3, I took a pill at the start of this article and starting to feel sleepy...so sweet dreams all!

I love Sleep MD. After years of using Tylonel PM and the like this product is a GODSEND. I take Three a night and Sleep Soundly. Best sleep I have had in years!! Better than perscription, and no nasty Hangover like day the next morning.

candice9000 said...

I agree with the folks who said it sorta starts to work and then you get crazy ass dreams and get jumpy. I also felt tingly all over.

Every time I feel asleep with SleepMD it was like I was still awake... I could still hear the TV and then I'd dream I was driving into a freakin' tree. Then other times when I didn't dream anything I still woke up with a JOLT after just nodding off.

That's weird!

Doesn't work for me... I've had 5 hours of sleep in the last 2 nights. I don't need SleepMD to give me any more visions of car accidents!

Dwerve said...

wow.. it is almost 2010 when i type this and this product is still out there. My well educated wife lacks any common sense when it comes to such "snake oil" products. I typed in the SleepMD in search of a scientifically based, skeptical assessment and was pleased to tumble across "the Angry Doctor".

I trust you are linked into the skeptical network and I'll hear you on a podcast in due course.

I have been suffering from insomnia for several months, I think, because of worry about my job responsibilities. I took SleepMD for the first time last night, feel asleep hard for the first time in a long time, and feel refreshed this morning. I'm going to try it again tonight.

Because our chemical make-up varies so will our reaction to medication and "supplement pills".
Visit your family Dr, tell her/him the name of whatever your going to take and go from there. Who knows maybe it's the perfect solution for you.

So I had diarrhia for the last week - which I have had probably only a couple of times in my entire over-70 life - and I tried to figure out what I had done differently over the last 8 days which could be the reason for this condition. And it suddenly hit me: my new sleep aid SLEEPMD. I will know more tomorrow as I will immediately discontinue it. And by the way, it did not put me to sleep for more than 4, 5 hours, just like Tylenol PM or Melatonin. Has anybody out there had a similar side effect from all those weird herbs? Thanks.

Anonymous said...

Ok, stopped the SLEEPMD and, pronto, diarrhea stopped. Maybe Dr. Heuer should double his income from this pill by advertising another batch as LAXMD !!

gretchen said...

This works for me. I tried it because I hated the groggy hangover feeling I got from Ex. PM or the generics of Ex. PM. One post mentioned "vivid dreams" and I am actually HAPPY to report that I DO seem to have more vivid and memorable dreams when I have taken SleepMD--a real bonus if you happen to do dream work and dream analysis!

I had to fall asleep to catch a new schedule for the start of the college semester, and well, I began to feel sleepy in just 45 minutes! However I did wake up at 1:45am, I figured it was because my body isn't used to having artificial sleep meds, i went back to sleep and woke up again at 4:12am fell asleep again then woke up at 6, which is just the time I needed, so it did the job with relatively minor wake-up's. Thanks Sleep MD!

Some folks never learn, we are all different and some of us are luckier than others and find a product that will work for us and do exactly what it says! Sleep MD works for me! Most wonderful nights sleep I have had in a while, been using this product for 6 months of and on and still works. I know you all know that Benadryl makes some hyper and puts some totally asleep, so why can't we all agree that some are lucky enough for this product to work for us while others will still have to experiment on other options! Grow up folks, agree to disagree! Happy days to you all!

Angry doctor should be angry at pharmaceutical companies not natural sleep aid manufacturers. I was on diphenhydramine (generic sleep aid) so hard it warped my conscience, led to deep depression. I couldn't go to the movies cause I had to take a piss every 10 minutes. When I stopped, nothing worked except this Sleep MD stuff. Considering how hard I was on the other stuff it's a miracle something works.

A few years ago I went to see a naturopath (regarding my severe rheumatoid arthritis), I rarely got sleep and hadn’t for years, what the Naturopath had me take for sleep was a combination:

"Sleep MD" (1 tablet or 1 ½ tablets before bed), and "Taurine", 1000mg (2 tablets) @ night.

Sleep MD (available at most drugstores) is recommended to get me to go to sleep quicker, and Taurine (available at most health food stores) helps to quiet the brain down, so I can have a more restful sleep once I do get to sleep. I did this for a short time (it took for about 2 weeks).

Worked great.

Dr.'s are in bed with pharmaceutical companies that control the health care industry. So therefore Dr.'s are not prone to select a natural or cheaper over the counter remedy for their patients. IF so many people say this works, then why would a Dr. post such a negative blog about this product. Maybe because he needs his patients to come to him pay an extremely high co-pay so that he can give them a chemical which will make them addicts forcing them to come back again and again. Sounds Familiar....hmmm

Anonymous said...

I think the Dr. needs a lesson in homeopathic medicine. Our forefathers...and mothers used what nature provided to cure most anything that ailed them. It is a lost and dying art. Ask yourself this question...Where do all the drug ideas come from? The answer is nature. Scientists see an animal or plant that can do or negate something...it's peculiar. So they test and analyze and test some more and then...poof...they isolate the naturally occuring compound. Then they try to reverse engineer it so they can in turn mass produce it. Do you know where metabolic steroids came from? Wild Yams...that's right scientists from the strange properties of the Wild Yam and isolated the substance. Unfortunately they couldn't get it quite right. That is why there are so many side effects of the man-made version. No two people are the same. Our bodies metabolize substances differently. So 99 people might try a new "drug" and it works great...but that 1 has an adverse reaction. Do we throw it out...no. Their bodies internal chemistry was significantly different from the others. That's why we do studies. Many cultures across the world still use naturally occuring remedies that work great. The task is matching what works with YOUR individual bodies chemistry. Personnaly I LOVE SleepMD. It works outstanding for me and numerous people I know, but it makes my wife as wide eyed as a hoot owl. I always knew that was wired funny...LOL. The bottom line here is...if it works for you, then use it. Oh, and natural is usually better than reverse engineered.

I've never had any problems sleeping but I think that I can offer some help. Firstly, try not to stigmatise the actualy event of you going to sleep. Just see it as something that you do each night because you're body needs a rest; and when you get into yiour bed, curl up, pull the duvet over your head, and then close your eyes to dream away to sleep. If you start panicking before you get into your bed, then you're 'putting' stress hormones into your bloodstream, and these are obviously going to keep you awake. If you cannot beat this by pure psychology, then try drinking a cup of decaffeinated tea before bed, or even eating a sandwich. Food triggers hormones to be produced that divery blod-flow to the stomach region, and this has the effect of making us tired.

I don't know whether or not anyone has done a review of this product. I haven't had a good experience with it.
I've been looking for a sleep aid that would leave me alert and refreshed in the morning. However, SleepMD was not it.
I would not have bought it, had I read the label properly.
1. It was an exorbitant price - $15.00 - for 30 caplets in very fancy packaging.
2. I was seduced by all the flimflam, emphasizing the doctors' role in formulating the product, and the many studies conducted, so I failed to pull aside the flap that revealed the real imformation - the ingredients. That's where I learned that the effective ingredient was melatonin. I can get 90 tablets of 5g melatonin for less than $10. Or I can get it in a liquid form from a helat food store, also for $10.
3. I have used the product for 2 nights only so far. I did not fall asleep quickly - more like 45 minutes - and each morning I woke up with a buzzy, headachy feeling, similar to when I drink chamomile tea.
Even though I've used 2 of the caplets, I would like to ask for my money back.

Sleep MD did not work for me, within 30 minutes I started to sweat and felt ill, my sleep was horrible, I would never take this again.

Colette said...

The ingredients for this herbal sleep aid have changed. It no longer includes valerian or white willow. It does now, however, include Chamomile powder (as Matricaria recutita) (flower). Thanks to this unannounced change to a product I have been taking without incidence (without a proper warning notification on the label) I have been driving myself crazy trying to figure out what has caused this horrible case of hives I have had for the past week. Similar products with "flower" ingredients typically contain a warning that ragweed allergy sufferers should not take the product. Needless to say, the company official site has no contact information. UGH

SleepMd does work. I do enjoy the effects of xanax but due to the potential of addiction and withdraws I wanted to try something natural. I don't want to depend on any drug to sleep or live. However I do take zoloft. 50 mg now I have adjusted to 100 mg. With that said, sleep is near impossible after starting and again with me after adjusting it to a higher dose. That's when sleepmd comes in the picture. I took it a week ago and still do to today. I feel so much more relaxed and confident of a healthy sleep. I would definately give it a try. I mean its not expensive nor is it addictive. Good luck to everyone out there, and sleep well :)

Works better for me than any sleep prescription I've ever used. Helps me relax and I stay asleep all night with no "hangover" the next morning.

I have tried two different Melatonin supplements. One worked pretty good. About a 6 on a 1-10 scale. But I took SleepMD. That was when I started having problems. After I started having the issues which were: SEVERE depression, Nausea, Panic Attacks! I thought I was going crazy. I researched Melatonin and it can amplify depression and other illnesses. Plus some Melatonin can be man man and also since it is a HORMONE they also can extract it from animals! Yeah...gross. I only took this stuff for two nights. One pill each night. NEVER again! I am still nauseous (2 days after taking it) and I hope it leaves me system for good soon. If I had stayed on it I think I would have become suicidal at one point. This is my reaction and doesn't necessarily mean you will have the same or similar reaction, but if you do, feel free to contact me.

This product worked incredibly well for me. I slept straight for 3 days. My wife called my boss and told him that I am sick. She was too embarrassed to tell him that I can't come to work because I am sleeping.

I love Sleep MD. It's the only thing that will get me to sleep on those nights that I find I'm just not sleepy. Or I'm tired but can't sleep. I take a sleep MD and get a good night's sleep. I feel good in the morning. That's all I need to know.
